Professor Oszkar Biro
Guest Editor for post-conference issue of IET SMT
Technical University of Graz, Austria
Oszkár Bíró graduated in 1977 at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Technical University of Budapest and gained the title Dr. techn. in 1980. From 1977 to 1987 he worked at the Department for Theory in Electrical Engineering of the Technical University of Budapest.
In 1987 he moved to Austria and had the position of a contract assistant at the Institute for Fundamentals and Theory in Electrical Engineering (IGTE) at the Graz University of Technology until 1991. In 1991 he became assistant professor of the same institute. In 1993 he obtained a qualification (habilitation) at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Graz University of Technology. In 2005 he was awarded the title “Doctor of the Academy” by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
Since 2004 he has been acting as head of IGTE, since 2009 as a full professor. He is also heading the Christian-Doppler Laboratory for Multiphysical Simulation, Analysis and Design of Electrical Machines.
The research interests of Oszkár Bíró focus on the numerical simulation of electromagnetic fields, especially by the method of finite elements. The applications cover a range from electrical machines to microwave devices, but the focus of his research is eddy current fields. He has about 120 publications in peer reviewed international journals and over 160 conference publications. He is acting on the Editorial Board of numerous scientific journals, among them of IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, and Compel. He chairs the Editorial Board of the biennial IGTE Symposia on electromagnetic field computation. He is an elected member of the Board of the International Compumag Society and has been appointed to chair the Editorial Board of Compumag 2013 in Budapest.
